Northern region to become millet and sorghum main growers

by www.portalangop.co.ao
Lubango - The Agriculture sector intends to move the millet and sorghum production from Angola?s southern region to the country?s northern side during the 2017/2018 agricultural campaign 2017/2018. ,

This was announced on Wednesday by the general director of Lubango’s Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), David Tunga.

Speaking to the press on the fringes of a delivery of 6.000 animal ploughs to Huila government, the director said the intention is to respond two very important challenges faced by the government and increase the production of these cereals to boost poultry food processing.

The other challenge, according to IDA’s director, is to produce amount of millet and sorghum during the wet season that will serve for the support of the southern provinces, whose dietary pattern is based on these cereals, and are being hit by the rain shortage.

He explained that the provinces of Huíla, Cunene and Benguela have frequently recorded drought problems, thus dropping significantly the production during this season, so, it is intended to turn the northern region into a buttress in the production of these cereals.
